LED driver enables animated automotive lighting

A multichannel RGB LED driver, the MLX81117 from Melexis leverages the MeLiBu communication interface for animated automotive lighting. The device, which packs an integrated MCU and 16 LED drivers, achieves color mixing accuracy of <1% delta UV and provides 16-bit color/intensity control.

Animated lighting in the vehicle cabin can be used to furnish driver-assistance prompts, vehicle status updates, and comfort functions like adaptive roof lighting. RGB LED lightbars communicate with the driver through color-coded, color-changing, and blinking sequences.

Through its MeLiBu high-speed communication interface, the MLX81117 LED driver maintains consistent color across all of the LEDs in the lightbar and implements simultaneous light changes. MeLiBu uses a CAN-FD physical layer to deliver robust and reliable performance at speeds up to 2 Mbps. The intelligent RGB LED driver also provides real-time compensation of any color drift caused by environmental changes.

Housed in a 32-pin, 5×5-mm QFN package, the MLX81117 operates with a supply voltage of 5.5 to 18V (40-V proof). It meets automotive ISO 26262 functional safety requirements up to safety integrity level B (ASIL B).
